What They Don’t Teach You in Data Science Courses | by Karan Kumar | May, 2025

Lessons from the real world that no online course will prepare you for

You’ve taken the courses. You’ve completed the capstone projects. You’ve even built a portfolio full of predictive models and visualizations. But then you land your first real data science job — or maybe start your first freelance project — and suddenly, things don’t look like they did in the tutorials.

The truth is, data science education — whether it’s from a university, bootcamp, or online course — is just the beginning. It teaches you how to do things: write Python code, train a model, plot a graph. But it often leaves out the why, the when, and most importantly — the what now?

Let’s talk about the real-world stuff nobody warns you about. The lessons you don’t learn in data science courses, but absolutely need to succeed.
