Pattern Recognition is a frequently discussed topic when someone talks about Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence these days.
Let’s understand together what it is all about, but try to keep it as simple as possible!
“Pattern” is something that repeats in a predictable manner
And to “Recognize” is to identify something/someone from past experience
But, since we’re talking in terms of Science & Engineering:
“Pattern Recognition” is the process of recognizing patterns or regularities in data
To make it simpler, assume that: you observed that whenever your cat is hungry, it starts rubbing it’s head over you. So, the next time your cat does this motion, you’re likely to assume that your sweet little cat is hungry, and not just showing affection to you 😉
You seem to have found out the pattern of your cat rubbing it’s head on your feet, and it being hungry. This is what is Pattern Recognition
Applications of Pattern Recognition can be:
- Image recognition (Face detection in our phone’s lock)
- Speech recognition (Google’s assistant, Alexa)
- Handwriting recognition (Google Lens)
- Medical diagnosis (detecting cancer cells vs non-cancerous cells in a scans)
